In general, we view a lot (if not all) of the Five Nights at Freddy’s characters that we draw as our own characters just because of how detached from canon/fanon we are generally. Also because we want Scott Cawthon to die.
To be fully accurate and transparent, though, we have two different tag modifiers that we use for FNaF characters; “OC” and “AC”

These characters are usually mentioned very, very briefly so we not only have to design their concept, but design their personality as well.
The character does explicitly exist in canon (either with a namesake or a nickname…sake) but we still developed them in a way that canon hadn’t at the time of creation (such as a visual design).
This is the base timeline we use and talk about. The most defining feature of this is that there are two Purple Guys. All the games are connected on one timeline. As close to game-canon as we will allow.
Somewhere between “Phone Guy is Purple Guy” and “Glitchtrap caused all of the murders by timetravel powers”. Glitchtrap hijacked a different timeline than his own to possess various people close to other Aftons to convince them to kill.
Non-canon. Anything that was either a throwaway comment/joke, something that doesn’t logically fit into the main timeline, or something self-indulgent. Kind of vague on purpose.
Different Purple Guy all together. A guy named Jack who can transform into a demon-y form for no reason other than we were a highschooler and thought it was neat. Doesn’t follow most of any plot. Has very few canon characters.
Genuinely claiming the entire source, the developers don't know what they're doing. We don't know enough about Nightbringer yet to decide how much these dorks apply to it.
